Iván Vargas-Chaves is a professor of Law and the head of GESH - The Group of Social and Human Studies at Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar (Cartagena de Indias, Colombia). He received his degree in Law (LL.B) from the Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, an LL.M. from the Università di Genova in Italy; and an M.C.L. from the Universities of Salamanca, Public of Navarra and Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in Spain and Italy. 
Before joining UTB, prof. Vargas-Chaves was a doctoral research fellow at University of Barcelona; associate professor in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, as well as visiting scholar at University of Illinois at-Urbana Champaign. In recent years he has presented his research on international events, mainly at universities in Europe and North America, and has published several book chapters and papers (in English, Spanish, and Italian) on peer-reviewed journals. He also has successfully supervised / examined postgraduate students, and is reviewer of papers submitted for publication in high impact journals. Since 2014, he is a member of the Intellectual Property in the Biosciences Group IPBio, and the Associação Portuguesa de Direito Intelectual ADPI. 
Currently, his research is in two connected fields. First, he has longstanding interests in intellectual property in the biosciences, in particular on how innovation policies transcend normative orders tied to environmental, biotechnological and agriculture issues. Second, he works in technological, environmental and health risks regulation from a precautionary perspective. In addition, prof Iván Vargas-Chaves was awarded institutional recognitions for his outstanding performance and achievements in teaching in the higher education. These were given by the Law Schools at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 2014, and Universidad Militar Nueva Granada in 2013, as well as by the chancellor of Universidad del Rosario in 2016.
