Professor of Law and head of the research groups on Global Justice (GIJUS) and Social and Human Studies (GESH) at Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar (Cartagena de Indias, Colombia). His research is in two connected fields. First, he has longstanding interests in intellectual property in the biosciences, in particular on how innovation policies transcends normative orders tied to environmental, biotech and agriculture issues. Second, he works in Law and New Technologies from a precautionary perspective of the risks and uncertainty in this matter.
Doctor of Juridical Science with 'Summa Cum Laude' honor at University of Barcelona. He received his degree in Law (LL.B) from the Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, an LL.M. from the Università di Genova in Italy; and an M.C.L. from the Universities of Salamanca, Public of Navarra and Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in Spain and Italy.
Before joining UTB, prof. Iván Vargas-Chaves was young-researcher at the Universidad de Barcelona and adjunct professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In 2015 he was visiting scholar at University of Illinois at-Urbana Champaign. He has also presented his works on international events, mainly at universities in Europe and North America, and has published extensively on his research topics. Currently he is member of the Intellectual Property in the Biosciences Group IPBio the OEPM Iberoamerican Specialists' Network, and since 2014 member of the Associação Portuguesa de Direito Intelectual.
